Course Description

The 10k course takes the runners to the Summit of Mystic Bike Park and back down in a loop that requires strong climbing legs and proficient downhill technical running skill in order to conquer the course.

Runners start under the Arch at the Pavilion Event Village and run along the flat wide paved roads of Pioneer Park before joining Mystic Bike Park and sticking to the Shuttle road until it turns upwards and the real race begins. At 2k the course ascends Emily's Spur, a steep dirt track that is unrelenting in gradient. It is a 440m climb of vertical metres, in just over a mile. It is a challenge for any level of runner, whether they are trying to race for the win or simply make it to the top. With views along the ridge line for the entire journey, it doesn't get more spectacular than this.

The course then summits Mystic and the panoramic views of Mount Buffalo and Bright open up. After heading on the trail around the back of the Paragliding launch pad, runners have the chance to refuel and hydrate at the aid station before tackling the second part of the course, the downhill!

The downhill starts with a wide dirt road down from the launch pad. Swinging back around the South side of the summit the course briefly high fives the runners further back in the race as it passes through Emily’s Corner and takes a sharp Right. This heads towards the techy MTB trail Techno Prisoners. This provides a fun and fast descent with awesome views along the way. Be mindful of other runners as they pass. At the bottom, be ready for an awkward end to the trail, it gets sketchy where it meets Brown Rd.

After turning Left onto Brown Rd, the course climbs ever so slightly for a while as it winds along this beautiful shelf track. Eventually you’ll meet the final challenge, the techy, rock descent down Boogaloo and into Mystic Downhill. This is hard, and probably in the dark for a lot of the field. So take care, you are almost home! Once at the bottom you’ll skirt around to the shuttle road again and blast the final 1.5k back along the river trails and to the finish line, where it all started.

MAPS

AVENZA MAP

It is important that everyone download the AVENZA Map before the Event. Along with having the GPX file in your watch, this is the best thing to allow you to get back on course if you are unsure where you are. Course tampering does happen, or people miss a turn easily in trail running. So you need to have a map to know where you are.

Download the AVENZA Map App to your phone. In the Store search for the Keywords “Buffalo Stampede 10k”, or scan the QR code below on your phone, or click the link on your phone. Then click “Free” next to the map to download the map for offline use on your phone. If you open the map, as long as you have enabled AVENZA to use your location, you will be able to locate where you are on the map and which way you are facing by clicking the little arrow. You can open and use this map even with no reception.

When you have the map open, have a play around. It is very useful. You can see the coordinates of the pointer down the bottom of the screen as you pan around the map. You can also press the draw icon in the bottom left to measure the distance between points.

  • No crew access on course.

  • There will be 3 Waves Starts for the 10k. This is to reduce trail congestion due to the large field sizes. We believe this will improve runner’s experience of the race and allow you to enjoy the beautiful trails.

    START TIMES:

    WAVE 1 (Front runners) - 6:00PM

    WAVE 2 (Mid pack) - 6:05PM

    WAVE 3 (Slower) - 6:10PM

Runners Times will be based off chip timing. Runners will be allowed to start in whichever Wave they choose. Be aware that usually we have 60% of runners choosing to be in Wave 2, so if you want to avoid congestion, you may do better to start in Wave 3.

The 10km Sky Sprint is a registered with the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).

All runners who complete the course will gain qualifier points for their ITRA Performance Index.
